![]() This was the beginning of seductive discoveries that culminated with the enormous influence that Bruce left on the neurobiology of stress. How do our life’s events influence the trajectory of our existence, the development of our brain, or what gets under our skin? Bruce McEwen spent the last five decades investigating the effects of stress hormones in the brain, after his seminal discovery in 1968 that demonstrated the presence of the receptors for corticosterone in the hippocampus (McEwen et al., Citation1968). ![]() In this very period, I would have benefited from Bruce’s revolutionary ideas on stress and the strategies that we all need to cope with it. Amidst this, I find myself still mourning the loss of Bruce McEwen, my mentor at The Rockefeller University. Stress is a prominent, universal experience, especially during these challenging times, with the world hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, forced social isolation, rising community unrest, and increasing environmental challenges.
